The book Purple Hibiscus by Chimimanda Ngozi Adichie follows the life of a Nigerian teenage girl, Kambili, who lives an extremely affluent yet dismal life. Kambili's father, Papa, is a fervent Catholic convert who has complete control over the household. Along with her brother, Jaja, Kambili has never learned how to think for herself or what freedom feels like, because her father has always given her commands. However, during a small vacation at Kambili's aunt's house, she and Jaja are introduced to a life which lacks the dominant reign of their father. The visit sparks a revolution in the minds of Kambili and Jaja, who bring home this new feeling of fun. As time goes on, the two teenagers, in addition to their mother, Mama, begin to rebel against the man whom they had suffered under for so long. Tradition is pitted against the modern world, and eventually, Mama refuses to be ordered around any longer and poisons Papa, killing him after a short period of time. In the end, the desire for liberty proves to be far greater than one's familial loyalty, and Kambili, Jaja, and Mama start their lives again, this time without Papa.
